June Birthstone

June’s Three Birthstones

When it comes to birthstones, June has options. Pearl is the traditional June birthstone, but in more recent years, moonstone and alexandrite have been added to the mix. Each gemstone has its own personality, flair, and reasons for being perfect for June births.

Pearl

Timeless and classic are two words that come to mind when thinking of pearls. Their subtle, natural luster and delicate looks make them the perfect choice for those looking for a softer, more elegant look. Pearls are born from mollusks and can be either farmed or found naturally. While white and black are the most common colors, they can also be found in pink, gray, and purple hues.

Pearl Meaning

For thousands of years, pearls have been valued by people across the globe. Ancient Chinese people believed that pearls came from dragons, while many Arabic people believed that they were tears shed from heaven. Some people believed that pearls could ensure a long life full of prosperity, while others believed that they were good for indigestion or could improve eyesight. Their soft, white luster has given them the association with purity and innocence, making them one of the most common gemstones for weddings.

Caring for Pearls

Pearls are naturally softer than other gemstones, due to the fact that they are not stones at all. They are only rated between 2.5 and 4.5 on the Mohs Hardness Scale, which means that they don’t handle being in rings or bracelets very well. This doesn’t mean pearls should be saved for only special occasions. Their origin makes them prone to drying out and cracking if stored away for too long. Pearls benefit from absorbing the oils on your skin, but you should be careful to avoid contact with chemicals that might cause the nacre to erode.

Moonstone

Mimicking a shard of moonlight, moonstone got its name from the glow that seems to come from just under the surface of the gemstone. While the most prized moonstones tend to be almost colorless with a blue sheen, they appear in several other colors, and their glow can span the entire color spectrum. These gemstones are popular with those seeking a more spiritual connection to their birthstone jewelry.

Moonstone Meaning

Moonstone got its name from Pliny the Elder, a Roman naturalist and philosopher. He believed that the soft glow of moonstone, called adularescence, was affected by the moon's phases. Moonstone was associated with the Greek and Roman deities of the moon and, as such, was believed to promote a sense of calm and balance to the wearers. Moonstone’s natural ethereal look made it a popular choice for art nouveau jewelry in the 1960s and again inspired jewelers in the 1990s.

Caring for Moonstone

At 6.0 to 6.5 hardness on the Mohs scale, moonstone fairs better than pearls in jewelry in high-contact areas, but it is still best to be worn in earrings, necklaces, and other places that won’t come in contact with chemicals or hard surfaces often. When cleaning, it should always be hand-washed with warm, soapy water and a clean, soft-bristled toothbrush. Ultrasonic cleaners can crack and shatter a moonstone, as can anything with high heat or a multitude of chemicals.

Alexandrite

Last, but absolutely not least is Alexandrite. One of the newest but most impressive gemstones is Alexandrite. This mineral was discovered in Russia in the 1830s and named after Alexander II. It gained popularity when people discovered that alexandrite had a color shift that ranged from red to green under different lighting conditions. Their ability to shift colors, their clarity, and their durability quickly rocketed them to become a prized gem throughout the world.

Alexandrite Meaning

Although discovered relatively recently, Alexandrite has plenty of beliefs surrounding it. Russians believed that it is a stone of good omen, and how could they not when this beautiful stone had both the green and red of the Russian military? The color shift is said to bring balance into one’s life by choosing people who have too much self-discipline and bringing joy into their lives.

Caring for Alexandrite

Alexandrite scores high on the Mohs Hardness Scale at 8.5, making it one of the toughest stones out there. This makes it perfect for daily wear jewelry like rings and bracelets. Although Alexandrite is tough and not prone to cracking, it should still be treated with care and cleaned regularly. Ensuring that it is put away when not in use, not exposed to harsh chemicals, and regularly cleaned will help ensure its longevity for decades to come.

Summary

June is one of the luckiest months when it comes to birthstone variety. Between the three gemstones (Pearl, Moonstone, and Alexandrite) there is sure to be one that strikes the heart of the person born in June. Whether they're a fan of the classic elegance pearls bring, the soft mysticism of a moonstone, or a more traditional feeling stone of Alexandrite, June really has it all.
